Drawing is a sensibility and action through which I process the external world and analyse the internal realm. This ongoing journey explores the secrets of the mind, the power of emotion, the relationship between the two and the connection to bodily response and social behaviour. The ability for introspection is one of the fundamental factors which makes us human; the ability to question, and imagine. To possess greater intelligence is one of our greatest gifts, it is a gift that can either manifest into acts of creation or forms of destruction.
In understanding these elements, one can begin to comprehend the issues that are faced within society and potentially empathise with its members. Continued analysis can hope to lead to increased awareness and understanding of the self, of social groups, as well as; racism, terrorism, sexism, war, social divide, and mental illness. On the micro level, research focuses on energy, brain architecture, circuitry and chemistry. On the macro level, cultural, social and political impacts are investigated. Philosophy, art, and science become a unified trinity; concept and intuitive working process are then married to create the works.
The drawings are a result of an ongoing line of enquiry, where ideas and intuition combine to form an expression of concept. They do not provide answers, only suggestions of understanding and triggers of association. Often these gestures resemble maps, cosmic realms, banks of data, and unidentified organisms. The drawings are often complex, sometimes existing as a history of mark making language which constructs or evolves over time. A drawing tool can act as an extension of the body, as a form of expression drawing can have an immediacy, where marks can suggest sensitivity, boldness, obsession and more. The intuitive and sometimes strategic working process of application and erasure, of layering and penetration, can lead to a battle between intimate concentrated action and overall pictorial space. Sometimes creating illusions on a surface fails to bring enough tangibility to a concept, thus working with physical space can add weight, presence, matter and sense of time to what previously could only be felt and not touched.
